    Professor Washington Yotto Ochieng CBE Director

    Biography

    Professor Ochieng is the Head of Department, Civil and Environmental Engineering and Chair Professor in Positioning and Navigation Systems. Professor Ochieng is a Member of the Board of Trustees of the Science Museum Group (SMG), appointed by the UK Prime Minister, and Chair of the Advisory Board of the Science Museum in London.

    His other affiliations include Trustee, Member of Council and President of the Royal Institute of Navigation (RIN), and Chair of the Africa Engineers Steering Committee of the Royal Academy of Engineering. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng), City and Guilds Institute, UK Institutions of Civil Engineers, Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation, and Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors. He holds advisory roles at the Department for Transport, Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL).

    Professor Jonathan Eastwood Co-Director

    Biography

    Professor Eastwood is the Convening Director of the School of Space, Security and Telecoms, one of the Schools of Convergence Science, at Imperial College London. He is also Professor of Space Physics in the Department of Physics. Within the wider Imperial community, Jonathan serves as Director of Space Lab, Imperial's Network of Excellence connecting all of Imperial's space expertise.

    Professor Eastwood’s research is concerned with understanding the risk of space weather, and how we can be resilient to this hazard. In this capacity he is the lead for the magnetometer on the upcoming European Space Agency Vigil space weather mission and leads the development of operational space weather forecasting capabilities in conjunction with the Met Office.

    Professor Julie McCann Co-Director

    Biography

    Professor McCann is the Vice-Dean (Research) for the Faculty of Engineering, Co-Director of the School of Space, Security and Telecoms (a School of Convergence Science) and Head of the Adaptive Emergent Systems Engineering (AESE) group at the Department of Computing at Imperial College London.

    Professor McCann also leads the Resilient and Robust Infrastructure challenge part of the Data Centric Engineering theme in the Alan Turing Institute, and serves as PI for the NRF-funded Singapore Eco Cities initiative; CHEDDAR (Communications Hub for Empowering Distributed clouD computing Applications and Research); and the EPSRC Science of Sensing Systems Software (S4) programme grant.

    Qiong Wang Centre Manager

    Biography

    Qiong joined the Centre for Active Resilience and Security (CARS) in November 2024, delivering the Centre’s mission and programme of activities across research, internal and external engagement, innovation and education. Previously, she led the international research and innovation pre-award operations team at Queen Mary University of London and the research and innovation development team at SOAS University of London, with a focus on increasing and diversifying funding for international collaborative projects.
