Exterior of the Royal School of Mines

RSM 175

Founded in 1851, the Royal School of Mines was the first school of its kind in the UK. Since then, it has shaped global expertise in mining, materials science and geoscience.

The year 2026 marks the 175th anniversary of the Royal School of Mines, a milestone that brings together generations of students, alumni, and staff from the Department of Materials and the Department of Earth Science and Engineering, all part of its story.

The Royal School of Mines is a shared identity shaped by collaboration, curiosity and a strong sense of belonging across disciplines and across time.

This year’s celebrations will be guided by shared themes, including ‘Atoms to Planets,’ reflecting how Materials and Earth Science and Engineering explore the same fundamental processes across vastly different scales, from the atomic level to planetary systems.

Throughout the year, we will be celebrating this spirit through a series of events, activities, and competitions. Stay tuned!
