Our focus is on advancing understanding of the sectoral context for innovation and competitiveness in the UK. One of CSEP’s activities is to review the state-of-play and potential ways forward for different key sectors, focusing on their gross value added and how this compares internationally, the emerging technological and market opportunities, and policy and other recommendations for government and industry.

So far, we have published these ‘Sectoral Systems of Innovation and the UK’s Competitiveness’ reports on the telecommunications, biopharma and medical devices sectors, with reviews of the fine chemicals, aerospace, automotive, and tidal energy sectors due to be published in 2025.

Some of these reviews will lead to sector strategies – our first has been published on the UK’s healthtech sector, with others to follow.

Sector reviews can also lead to deep dives into a sector topic that requires more detailed research. For example, we are currently engaged in a study of R&D productivity in the UK’s biopharma sector.

We welcome stakeholder feedback on each of these reports. If you have any comments, please get in touch with Rupert Shute, Director of engagement and Professor of Practice, CSEP (r.shute@imperial.ac.uk).
