The influence of particle morphology on the dynamic densification of metal powders
, Shock Compression of Condensed Matter, Pages: 1491-1494Powders are well known for their dispersive properties, which derive from the many dissipative processes that occur during densification. While numerous studies have been devoted to understand these processes over a wide range of initial densities, the influence of particle morphology has been for the large part overlooked. In this paper, we discuss a new research campaign at the Institute of Shock Physics, to systematically investigate the role of starting configuration on the dynamic densification of metal powders. Multi-target gun loading experiments have been performed on both stainless steel and copper powders of equiaxed- and fiber-shaped morphology. Frequency-shifted PDV was employed to measure the structure and velocity of the dynamic densification wave, to yield the crush strength of the various powders. We find that while the crush strength for the stainless steel powders is reasonably described by a modified Wu-Jing model, this model underpredicts the densification stress for the copper powder.

Towards the role of interfacial shear in shock-induced intermetallic reactions
, Shock Compression of Condensed Matter, Publisher: American Institute of Physics (AIP), Pages: 327-330, ISSN: 1551-7616Shock-induced intermetallic reactions have previously been shown to occur on a nanosecond timescale, with the role of mass mixing processes driven by inter-facial shear at material interfaces suggested as a possible explanation. Experimental setups allowing the role of friction on these mechanisms to be considered are presented. Simulations show that the use of an impedance mismatch, shock driven experimental setup should allow sliding velocities of 50 - 100 m s⁻¹ to be attained with mechanical mixing the main reaction mechanism. A second setup utilising the oblique impact of small spherical projectiles upon a target plate is predicted to enable much higher sliding velocities of up to 2 Km s⁻¹ to be attained with thermally driven diffusion reaction mechanisms becoming dominant.

Development of the gas gun driven expanding cylinder technique
, Conference of the American Physical Society Topical Group on Shock Compression of Condensed Matter, Publisher: American Institute of Physics (AIP), Pages: 1141-1144, ISSN: 1551-7616Using a gas gun to create rapid expansion in metal cylinders to investigate fracture and fragmentaion has been commonplace for the last several decades. Results from such experiments alongside data from explosive and electromagnetic expansion techniques have produced several models for fragment size and mass distributions. We present a new geometry for expansion that can be applied to cylinders at elevated & reduced temperatures whilst keeping the drive mechanism constant, enabling us in the future to experiment over a range of sample temperatures at a fixed strain rate and loading path. This new geometry has been investigated through a series of gas gun experiments employing X-ray radiography and AUTODYN simulations to reveal the deformation and failure behaviour within the cylinder.

Experimental Studies of Magnetically Driven Plasma Jets
, Astrophysics and Space Science, Vol: 336, Pages: 41-46, ISSN: 1572-946XWe present experimental results on the formationof supersonic, radiatively cooled jets driven by pressuredue to the toroidal magnetic field generated by the 1.5 MA,250 ns current from the MAGPIE generator. The morphologyof the jet produced in the experiments is relevant toastrophysical jet scenarios in which a jet on the axis of amagnetic cavity is collimated by a toroidal magnetic fieldas it expands into the ambient medium. The jets in the experimentshave similar Mach number, plasma beta and coolingparameter to those in protostellar jets. Additionally theReynolds, magnetic Reynolds and Peclet numbers are muchlarger than unity, allowing the experiments to be scaled toastrophysical flows. The experimental configuration allowsfor the generation of episodic magnetic cavities, suggestingthat periodic fluctuations near the source may be responsiblefor some of the variability observed in astrophysical jets.Preliminary measurements of kinetic, magnetic and Poyntingenergy of the jets in our experiments are presented and discussed, together with estimates of their temperature andtrapped toroidal magnetic field.

Non-LTE Plasma Spectroscopy
This thesis is based around the techniques used in theoretical and computational modellingof the spectra and radiative properties of non-LTE plasmas, particularly those which are photoionised.The thesis begins with a discussion of the concepts important to the modelling of these plasmas,and of the methods which are used in order to model them. Within this, the DCA code ALICE isdescribed in the context of a general discussion of collisional-radiative models. The code is thenapplied to the modelling of a laboratory photoionised astrophysical plasma experiment, and therelation of the experiment to astrophysical plasmas is discussed. A new experiment in that fieldis then proposed and the increased relevance of the new method to the astrophysical case isdemonstrated. Throughout the application of the code, several problems with the use of DCAcodes to model plasmas are discussed, and therefore the design of a new DTA code is described,some of the methods used within which are novel. The new code is designed to consider highdensity plasmas where the shapes of spectral lines are important and a description of linebroadening theory is given. This code is applied to the first analysis of a recently performedlaser-plasma experiment. The thesis concludes with a discussion of spectra of Germaniumobtained from NIF, and some possible unusual features contained within them.

Interaction of a Supersonic Plasma Jet With an Argon Ambient Using Laser Interferometry
, IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science, Vol: 39, Pages: 2830-2831Highly supersonic radiatively cooled plasma jets are produced by introducing a 1-MA 250-ns current pulse from the MAGPIE generator into a radial foil. The setup allows for the introduction of a neutral gas above the foil, in order to study the jet-ambient interaction. The dynamics are characterized by the formation of several shock features, which are imaged using laser interferometry. This diagnostic also allows to measure the electron density of the plasma, and examples of such results are presented here.
