Review of progress at the uk central laser facility in developing XUV lasers based on recombining laser produced plasmas
, Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering, Vol: 913, Pages: 100-104, ISSN: 0277-786XA programme of research by UK Universities and overseas collaborators at the SERC Central Laser Facility is directed to the development of XUV lasers based on recombining laser produced plasmas. Laser amplification has been demonstrated for recombination to hydrogenic ions C VI and F IX with Hα laser amplification at 182 and 81 Å respectively, and for lithium like ions, namely Aℓ, XI with 4f-3d and 5f-3d laser amplification at 150/154 and 106/104 Å respectively and Cℓ XV 4f-3d at 83 Å. An initial study of Na-like Cu XIX has been made. Current work is looking for ways to improve the efficiency, increase the gain length and reduce the wavelength to reach the 44 Å edge of the water window. The review summarises past work and outlines current work. © 1988 SPIE.

Experimental observation of ion correlation in high density plasmas
, Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering, Vol: 913, Pages: 91-97, ISSN: 0277-786XIn this paper we present the first observation of ion correlation effects in a dense plasma. A range of experiments has been carried out at the SERC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, UK, using their high power laser system (VULCAN) for shock compression and heating of thin aluminium foil targets. The plasma is produced in aluminium Ising a colliding shock technique. Short range order within the plasma is observed using the Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) spectrum of the aluminium K absorption edge. Densities ≈2X solid density have been measured from the EXAFS spectrum. These results are in reasonable agreement with the computer predictions. © 1988 SPIE.

X-ray laser research at the rutherford laboratory
, Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering, Vol: 831, Pages: 270-274, ISSN: 0277-786XRecent x-ray laser research carried out at the Rutherford laboratory has concentrated on examining recombination pumping in H-like and He-like ions. Laser irradiation of thin fiber targets establishes a rapidly expanding plasma column in which population inversions are created during the recombination cascade. Experimental results in H-like carbon and fluorine systems will be presented along with the preliminary analysis of Li-like Al and Cl systems. © 1988 SPIE. EXFAS/reflEXFAS experiments using laser-produced plasma X-ray sources
, Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering, Vol: 831, Pages: 200-210, ISSN: 0277-786XLaser-produced plasma continuum X-ray sources have been generated using the high power VULCAN glass laser system at the SERC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, and used for a range of X-ray absorption spectroscopic measurements. EXAFS (extended X-ray absorpticn fine structure) spectra have been recorded in transmission mode for various low Z materials using both time-integrated and time-resolved techniques, and experiments have been performed to study ion correlation effects in a strongly coupled plasma via nearest neighbour distance measurement. A reflection geometry has also been demonstrated in which grazing incidence reflection EXAFS (reflEXAFS) spectra have been recorded, and experiments performed to investigate surface effects occurring during pulsed laser irradiation of thin nickel overlays on silicon. An assessment is made of the usefulness of such experimental methods, and comparisons made with alternative techniques. © 1988 SPIE.

X-ray laser research at the rutherford appleton laboratory
, Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering, Vol: 688, Pages: 2-11, ISSN: 0277-786XRecent experiments carried out at the Central Laser Facility clearly show amplification of spontaneous emission at 182Å with a g1-4 in a recombining carbon plasma. Thin 7μm diam. carbon fibres were irradiated with the VULCAN Nd.glass laser system. This scheme was extended to shorter wavelengths by using LiF-coated carbon fibre targets. Initial analysis of the experimental data indicates gain of the Balmer a transition of fluorine at 81Å. © 1987 SPIE.

Expansion cooled recombination lasers in the XUV
, Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering, Vol: 664, Pages: 258-264, ISSN: 0277-786XGeneral conditions for generating high gain by expansion cooling will be discussed. Theoretical and experimental studies of the carbon fibre approach show good agreement. The development of scaling laws for this simple system allows optimisation and flexibility to be identified in the operating conditions. Seeding and coating the fibre with appropriate elements introduces further flexibility by additional radiation cooling. Fibre doping with elements from nitrogen to neon extends laser action from 182Å to 61Å. Shorter wavelength operation at 39Å may be generated from aluminium based targets. © 1986 SPIE.

STUDY OF X-RAY LASER SCHEMES USING NEW EXPERIMENTAL FACILITIES AT THE RUTHERFORD APPLETON LABORATORY.
, Pages: 71-79, ISSN: 0449-1947New experimental facilities have recently been developed at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory for line focus irradiation using the Vulcan Neodymium glass laser installation and for time-resolved spectroscopy of VUV emission. The system is designed for study of XUV lasers and has been used in a preliminary survey of several schemes. Particular emphasis has been placed on study of the CVI recombination laser using fibre targets of up to 2cm length. Measurements show clear evidence of amplification on the 18. 2nm H alpha transition in CVI.
