What is your job title, and what department do you work in?

I am the Head of Technical Operations and Safety in the department of Bioengineering.

Why do you think the Technician Commitment is important?

The Technician Commitment is so important, within Imperial and nationally, as it shines a light on the essential work technicians do every day, work that often goes unseen but is absolutely critical to our success. It's about fairness, visibility, and ensuring that technical staff are recognised, supported, and given the opportunities they deserve.

What do you enjoy about being involved with the Technician Commitment?

I genuinely enjoy hearing technicians' stories, their creativity, resilience, and the pride they take in their work. Being part of the Technician Commitment Steering Group allows me to be a small part in helping to amplify those voices and push for meaningful recognition and change across the institution.

What has the Technician Commitment achieved at Imperial that you are most proud of?

I think the Technical Commitments activities that bring together and link our Technical Professionals from across our department and spaces are particularly important. I’m proud of how it’s helped shift the culture. We’re seeing more technicians being celebrated, more investment in their development, and a growing recognition that they are not just support staff, they are collaborators, innovators, and leaders in their own right (winning grants now as well!).

Tell us something interesting you have discovered about technicians (past or present) at Imperial.

One thing that really struck me is the sheer diversity of expertise, everything from pure biology, mechanics and electronics, to advanced robotics and AI systems support. It’s a reminder that technical excellence comes in many forms, and that our technicians are often quietly pioneering behind the scenes.

What is your top tip for technicians who would like to progress their careers at Imperial?’

Your career belongs to you, and I would advise everyone to look at their interests, how they’d like to develop, and how they'd like to get involved more broadly in areas they’d like to progress. Don’t be afraid to share your achievements, ask for development opportunities, and connect with others across Imperial. There’s a growing network of support; please do use it, and don’t underestimate the value of your voice and your contributions.

Tell us something that people would be surprised to find out about you!

My partner and I have a part-time little dog. We help look after a friend's cockapoo every week. He's a bundle of energy and has a better social life than I do. It's a great way to unwind and get outside, plus I've become a bit of a pro at dog walking in all weather!
