Smart structural optimisation

Introduction

This area of research is motivated by the deisre to take advantage of the group's multidisciplinarity and develop new optimisation methods and algorithms that can be applied in a range of different fields. Being based in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, the group is at the frontier between biomechanics and more traditional structural mechanics, and can therefore interact with both fields to make state-of-the-art contributions.

Projects

slab

Sustainable optimisation of structural form

This projects aims at developing optimisation tools to minimise cost and increase sustainability in the construction phase of buildings.

unitcell

Modelling of auxetic materials

This project is aimed at characterising the mechanical behavior of auxetic materials. Different lattice structures and shapes are investigated using finite element analyses.

Scaffold3d

Multi-objective optimisation of scaffold design

This project focuses on developing smart digital design tools for biocompatible 3D-printed scaffolds, providing fine control over new tissue volume formation, three-dimensional arrangement, and effective mechanical properties.
