Exciting proposals for a new development beneath the Westway

Development Zone 1 at Imperial’s White City Campus will connect the Imperial and wider community by creating a welcoming meeting point at the centre of the White City Campus.
Development Zone 1
Imperial’s plans for Development Zone 1 were approved by the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham in late 2024. Our proposals for Development Zone 1 will deliver a welcoming meeting point at the centre of the White City Campus with two new buildings and public spaces that would connect the Imperial and wider community.
We are excited by the opportunity to enliven the area under the Westway and create an engaging social space that attracts campus users and the local community, and we will be exploring meanwhile opportunities for this area in the short term.
Our plans for Development Zone 1 will deliver:
- Two new buildings providing new amenities such as a new café or restaurant/bar for campus users and local people.
- Enhancements to this key link under the Westway, connecting Imperial’s White City Campus via new pedestrian routes.
- The opportunity to provide a range of uses open to the Imperial community and a café or restaurant/bar from a commercial operator which would be open to all.
- Dynamic public realm with extensive outdoor spaces which could be used for campus and community activities.
- Enlivenment of an area under the Westway, which is current vacant, to create an attractive destination.
- New planting which creates a vibrant green destination and improves biodiversity, in line with Imperial’s Net Zero Carbon 2040 Agenda.
Designed by award-winning architects Turner Works, Development Zone 1 has been envisaged as a pair of buildings that will provide a variety of social spaces for the students and staff of Imperial College London, as well as for the local community around White City. Following the planning approval from the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham, we are now refining the uses of these buildings in line with the broader development of White City Campus and the future needs of campus users. We do not expect to progress the delivery of Development Zone 1 imminently, but will be activating this key location with events and activities.
