A student in the CMBI

One of our key objectives at the CMBI is to be a centre of excellence in training young academics and clinically qualified researchers in bacterial infection biology at the postgraduate and clinical research level, in part to address the shortage of UK-trained academics and clinicians developing research careers in bacterial infection biology.

Our overall mission is to be at the forefront of research on bacterial infection and immunity, with the significant critical mass to cover major areas of scientific interest and clinical importance. Through our training and development programme, we aim to fulfil our scientific vision - that understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying pathogenesis and host resistance will enable rational approaches to the design of novel and effective vaccines and antibacterial drugs.

Through our research and collaborations with the Imperial College Healthcare Trust, other academic institutions and industry, which have complementary interests and expertise, the Centre provides excellent opportunities for postgraduate study at the masters and PhD levels. We also encourage enquiries about training from well-qualified graduates as well as postdoctoral researchers and early career research fellows who are interested in working in, and/or undertaking a fellowship within the Centre.

Students benefit from being able to work on projects across the numerous research groups within the Centre, with access to excellent core facilities and a dedicated team of technical and administrative support staff. They are also part of the CBRB postgraduate student group which runs its own seminars and social events.

Students will also be members of the College's Graduate School which offers a comprehensive training programme for MRes and PhD students to enhance their research, professional and personal development skills.
