MSc graduate 2022 – Judy Eid

I grew up in Lebanon and pursued a degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering at American University of Beirut (AUB). The main reason that encouraged me to choose civil engineering as a career was its direct relation to human needs. “Civil engineering is the improvement of civil society through the application of scientific knowledge. Studying engineering provides a better understanding of the environment and how to use it effectively to improve the quality of life safely and smartly.”

Throughout my time in Lebanon, I was a witness to many engineering failures in buildings, bridges, and infrastructure and understood that these catastrophic failures were due to a lack of responsibility and knowledge of the basic civil engineering considerations. I consider myself to have a responsibility in ensuring the safety of my community by educating myself and advocating better practices of safety in engineering design and application. As such, I  worked on tailoring my professional and technical skills through enhancing my experience in the field of geotechnical engineering by perusing a master’s degree in Soil Mechanics and Environmental Geotechnics at Imperial College London (2021-2022). Imperial College soon became my haven, providing me with the necessities to lead a meaningful life and the space to develop my identity and purpose.

Currently, I am serving as graduate geotechnical engineer at Tony Gee and Partners LLD. As a graduate geotechnical engineer, I am involved in projects over a variety of sectors including Rail, Highways, and Water. I assist in the delivery of foundation, retaining wall, slope stabilization and earthworks designs as well as providing recommendations for a variety of geotechnical design solutions. My focus is to identify and implement sustainability while maintaining best practice in geotechnical design solution.

I am passionate about organizing events to present the latest technology and research frontier to the younger members of the geotechnical community. For this reason, I am serving as a core team member with Young Member Presidential Group (YMPG), a board level committee by the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE).  The foremost aim of the society is to engage the next generation of geotechnical engineers in the ISSMGE. This is accomplished through a wide network of liaisons and corresponding members around the world. The YMPG acts as the nexus of this network by enabling the sharing of knowledge and ideas, connecting young geotechnical engineers with each other’s, and facilitating communication between young members and ISSMGE Leadership.
