Kawasaki disease causes swelling of blood vessels throughout the body and can affect the coronary arteries. The disease is rare in the UK and only affects around eight in every 100,000 children under five years old; however, it is much more common in Japan and also affects boys more than girls. Although it is not contagious, it is still unknown what causes the disease.
