PsilOpioid: A proof of concept randomised controlled trial to investigate psilocybin therapy and brain reward mechanisms in opioid use disorder (OUD).

PsilOpioid is a research study being conducted by Imperial College London. This study aims to test whether psilocybin (a substance found in ‘magic mushrooms’) can be helpful in treating people with opioid use disorder and to find out how this treatment might work.

Who can take part?

You may be eligible to participate if you have been previously diagnosed with opioid use disorder and have completed detox from opioids or are due to complete detox very soon. This includes detox from street opioids or coming off opioid substitution therapy.

However, there are certain criteria that exclude some individuals from taking part, such as certain psychiatric conditions including psychotic disorder and bipolar disorder, current heart issues and certain neurological conditions. The study team would discuss all criteria in detail during a screening visit.

Participation in this study is entirely voluntary. If you do join the study, you can change your mind at any time and withdraw without affecting your usual care.

What will the study involve?

As part of this study, we will ask you to attend a screening visit at Hammersmith Hospital in London. If you are suitable for the study and would like to take part, there will be a further 5-6 visits at Hammersmith Hospital, as well as 5-6 phone or video calls. This will be over 13 weeks and include:

  • 1 dose of psilocybin given in a safe and supported environment
  • Supportive therapy before and after the psilocybin dose
  • 3 full-day visits to Hammersmith Hospital
  • 2 MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) brain scans
  • Questionnaires to complete throughout

Please refer to the flow chart on the second page of this letter to better understand the details of the study.

Will I be paid for taking part in the study?

Participants who complete all 12 study visits will be paid up to £450. All travel will be reimbursed, and accommodation will be provided when overnight stays are required.
