Monte Carlo classical simulations of ionization and harmonic generation in the relativistic domain
, Physical Review A: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics, Vol: 51, Pages: 1420-1430, ISSN: 1050-2947The magnetic-field component of a very intense laser field interacting with an atom cannot normally be neglected for intensities that lead to relativistic velocities of the electrons. Here we investigate stabilization and harmonic generation in this relativistic regime from a three-dimensional hydrogen atom modeled as a classical system with a distribution of initial conditions derived from a Monte Carlo average. Particular emphasis is placed on the problems of ionization in the direction of propagation of the applied laser field, which will be shown to arise from the inclusion of the magnetic-field component of the laser field. In the harmonic spectra, Doppler shifting occurs for observation directions orthogonal to the direction of laser-field propagation. Retardation effects show up in the harmonic spectra in the forward direction and inhibit the magnetic-field effects of the free-electron contribution of the forward-direction spectrum. In general, few harmonics are observed in our single-atom treatment because of the magnetically induced three-dimensional motion of the electron for intensities approaching the relativistic regime, and because of high ionization probabilities, i.e., also the breakdown of stabilization, for strongly relativistic laser intensities.

Realization of a magnetic mirror for cold atoms
, Physical Review Letters, Vol: 75, Pages: 629-632, ISSN: 0031-9007We have demonstrated that cold atoms can be retroflected from a ferromagnetic surface by the Stern-Gerlach effect. When the surface is magnetized periodically, the reflectivity for suitably polarized atoms is (948)% and the reflection is specular. A demagnetized surface is also highly reflecting but the reflections are diffuse. These magnetic processes are of interest for atom optics because they permit the manipulation of cold atoms without the use of laser beams. In our experiments, Rb atoms released from a magneto-optic trap (MOT) fall under gravity until they are reflected, after which they are recaptured in the MOT. Multiple bounces of these atoms have been studied for times up to 600 ms. © 1995 The American Physical Society.

RADIATING COHERENT ATOMIC WAVE-PACKETS
, LASER PHYSICS, Vol: 5, Pages: 451-460, ISSN: 1054-660XRecent progress in the production and control of atomic wave packets calls for reexamination of the most fundamental quantum optical processes. We examined the evolution of the atomic wave packet resonantly driven by the monochromatic laser beam and the spontaneous emission from an extended atom. We stress the role of Doppler shifts in the dephasing of the atomic dipole. New effects of single-pulse photon echo, homogeneous Doppler modification of the emission line, and interference effects in the coherent part of the emission spectrum are discussed. We also present the emission spectra of an atom oscillating in a harmonic trap.

ROLE OF ELECTRON LOCALIZATION IN INTENSE-FIELD MOLECULAR IONIZATION
, PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS, Vol: 75, Pages: 2819-2822, ISSN: 0031-9007The rate of nonlinear ionization is strongly enhanced as a molecule is stretched beyond its equilibrium internuclear separation, reaching a peak rate that is many orders of magnitude greater than that at either small or large distances. The enhancement results from nonadiabatic electron localization near the nuclei and its presence is insensitive to the laser frequency and intensity. Most intense-field dissociative ionization experiments are influenced by this effect.

YbF - a new way to measure the electron electric dipole moment
Heavy diatomic 2Σ or 2Π molecules were considered to be spectaculary sensitive systems to search for a permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) of the electron. To devise a molecular beam experiment using this kind of molecule, a variety of candidate molecules were considered. The YbF compound was chosen at the molecular beam and the production and detection methods for the molecules were studied. Several chemical mixtures were utilized to measure YbF production efficiency. Using both the hot wire and laser induced fluorescence, YbF was detected. Narrow linewidth of the crossed laser molecular beam apparatus was utilized to determine the spin-rotation and hyperfine splitting constants of the YbF molecule.

Measurement of the hydrogen 1S lamb shift
This paper is reports about the measuring of the Lamb shift of the 1st hydrogen ground state as a test of quantum electrodynamics using Doppler-free two photon absorption. Mid-way of the experiment, the 1S-2S transition with high resolution was observed. Presently, the statistical uncertainty of Lamb shift measurement is less than 10 ppm, comparable to the Lamb shift measurement in any system.

Simulations of laser cooling in a penning trap
, Pages: 3-4Available information is often limited from ion trapping experiments about the effectiveness of the laser cooling and the exact state of motion of the trapped ions. For this reason, we have performed extensive simulations of the motion of ions experiencing laser cooling in a Penning trap. We are then able to use the results of the simulations both to interpret the experimental results we obtain and also to guide future experiments.
