Rui Costa is President and CEO of the Allen Institute and a neuroscientist focused on the brain mechanisms underlying movement and learning. His laboratory uses genetic, electrophysiological, optical, and behavioral approaches to study the neurobiology of action, and has uncovered neural circuit mechanisms in the basal ganglia with implications for movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease. He earned his DVM from the University of Lisbon and completed his PhD at UCLA, followed by postdoctoral work at Duke University and a section chief role at the National Institutes of Health. He joined the Champalimaud Neuroscience Program in 2009 and Columbia University in 2016, where he later served as Director and CEO of the Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute. He is an elected member of the European Molecular Biology Organization and the National Academy of Medicine, and has received the Ariëns Kappers Medal from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.
