DML co-designed and jointly delivered a hi-flex workshop in studio, to explore how motion capture technology could be used in surgical training.

It’s always so energising to work with colleagues whose instincts are “how can we do this thing?” or “how can we look at this differently” .

Students on the Simulation module (as part of the PG Cert, Dip & MEd in Surgical Education) were able to join in person or remotely via a live feed. The session comprised a live demonstration of motion captured surgery (on a banana!), and a discussion between the clinicians, module leads, and media specialist staff about how the technology might impact surgical training. Many of the consultant surgeons and senior trainee surgeons participating were already involved with using technology in their surgical work, and one of the key aims of the session was to provide the face to face students with an immersive experience, making use of the DML's facilities, skills and experience. DML were able to provide the opportunity for hands on experience of technology used in simulation and virtual environments, whilst engaging with the remote learners via the live feed.
DML's patience, support, energy, creativity and resourcefulness, especially when faced with challenges have been nothing short of remarkable. The students absolutely loved the session and we all found the whole experience thought-provoking.
