The following checklist is designed to help academic staff prepare for the transition to Canvas and ensure that courses are ready for students before the start of teaching.
Please note: roles and responsibilities vary across faculties and departments. Some of the activities listed may be undertaken by different faculty team members. Check with your local EdTech / IDEA Lab for guidance relevant to your area.

Accept your Canvas Sandbox invitation. |

Complete the self-led Getting Started with Canvascourse (approximately 1 hour). |

Attend any relevant Canvas training sessions provided by your EdTech Lab. |

Join any faculty or departmental drop-ins, support sessions and briefings for updates and guidance. |

Access Your Courses |
|
|
Log in to Canvas using Single Sign-On (SSO). |

|
Confirm your 2025/26 migrated course is visible. |
□ |
|
Confirm your 2026/27 course shell is visible. |
□ |
|
Check that you can access all modules for which you are responsible. |

|
Review Your Migrated 2025/26 Course |
|
|
Business School courses: Faculty will only be given access to the 2026/27 course shell created by the Ed Tech team; the 2025/26 migrated course visibility check does not apply. FoNS courses: Please do not make major changes to the migrated 2025/26 course, as it is intended to be a record of previously delivered teaching. FoE If your department has migrated existing content, you only need to review and update it as required. |

Confirm that course content has migrated successfully. |

Check for any formatting or layout issues resulting from migration. |

Review files, pages, media and resources to ensure they display correctly. |

|
Check for broken links or missing files. Review all LTI links and integrations and reconnect or import LTI tools where required or ask for support for this. |

Review quizzes and assessments to ensure they function as expected. |
□ |
|
Important: No student data, grades or discussion activity will be present within migrated courses. This is expected. |

Build and Prepare Your 2026/27 Course |
|
|
Set up the overall structure of your course. |

|
Create course components (Pages, Assignments, Quizzes, Files etc.). |
□ |
|
Organise content using Modules and an appropriate weekly or topic-based structure. |
□ |
|
Import or copy relevant content from previouscourses where required. |
□ |
|
Set up or review assessments, dates and weightings. |
□ |
|
Ensure all course information is accurate and up to date. |
□ |
|
Review and update academic integrity information. |
□ |
|
Cross-check the course against the Course ReadMe guidance. |
□ |
|
Review the course against the Digital Education Baseline requirements. |
□ |
|
Follow agreed naming and grouping conventions to support Learning Analytics reporting. |

Student Experience and Accessibility |
|
|
Add a welcome message to the Homepage. |

|
Review and update Homepage Quick Links. |
□ |
|
Remove any placeholder text, draft content or staff-only instructions. |
□ |
|
Use Student View to review the course from a student's perspective. |
□ |
|
Check accessibility, navigation and content visibility. |
□ |
|
Ensure all content intended for students is clear, accurate and easy to access. |

Final Publishing Checks |
|
|
Confirm the course is ready for delivery. |

Check that all required modules have been published. |
□ |
|
Confirm any intentionally unpublished content remains hidden. |

|
Verify course dates and availability settings. |

|
Approve and publish the course. |
□ |
|
Confirm students will be able to access the course at the appropriate time. |

Important: Students will not be able to access a module until both, the course has been published; and they have been enrolled via Banner. |

We are migrating courses from the previous seven years (6 year for the Business School). This process will take time to complete. We expect all course migrations to be completed by the start of term. This process will take time to complete and will vary by faculty and department. Edtech labs will notify you when the migration for your course is ready. |
