Science to transform healthcare and health

An introduction to the Health and Technology theme

Health has always been one of humanity’s greatest challenges, and one of its greatest triumphs.

The Health and Technology theme exists to drive convergence between disciplines, technologies and mindsets to shift the global conversation from treating illness to sustaining lifelong health – across diverse populations, geographies and systems.

Our approach is bold, integrative and impact-led. Working across Imperial and beyond, we are redefining how health research is done, who it serves, and what it can achieve – creating a fairer, healthier and more resilient future for all.

Our missions

The School of Convergence Science is mission-led – shaped by society’s most complex challenges. Below are some exemplar missions the School is developing to shape a healthier world by 2050:

Diagnostics in the wild: What if real-time sensing and AI-powered interpretation can be embedded into everyday environments – to detect chronic diseases before symptoms emerge and to detect acute illnesses rapidly?

Frugal healthtech: What if the next generation of health innovation emerged from the Global South – designed locally, scaled globally, and unconstrained by the assumptions of legacy health systems?

Programmable public health: What if health interventions were dynamically generated for each individual, using real-time behavioural data, AI-powered narrative generation, and deep mechanistic understanding?

Preventative therapies: What if we could prevent disease, infections, cancers, and drug resistance, before they emerge?

These aren’t slogans. They are blueprints. Science guided by humanity.
