Read this page but still have level-checking questions?
Contact CLCC language enquiries
Before you are allocated a place on a language module, we will need to check that you are eligible for the language you have applied for and check which level you should take. This may involve a 10/15-minute online level-checking meeting with a member of the languages team. For some languages, you may be required to complete a questionnaire, take a quick online test or submit a short piece of writing, either prior to, or during, your online level assessment.
Not all students will need to attend a level-checking meeting, as depending on their previous experience/ qualifications they may be automatically eligible. To get an idea of whether you may need a level-checking meeting, please complete this very quick, 1-minute online form.
Please note: Our modules are not suitable for native or near-native speakers.
Eligibility to repeat a module: Students may repeat a language module provided they have less than 50% attendance and have completed no more than one piece of assessment (either coursework or in-class test).
What happens after my level assessment?
It is important to understand that being found eligible for a language module is not an offer of a place; module allocations are done by an algorithm that aims to maximise overall group happiness, i.e. it aims to provide all students with one of their highly-ranked modules. However, each module has a limited capacity, and it is therefore possible that during module allocation you will not be given a place on the module you are being level assessed for. If that happens, you are very welcome to then join the waiting list.
Module allocations will be confirmed by email during the summer vacation, and you will be advised how to join the waiting list if you have not been allocated a place on your first-choice module.

Prior to applying
If you complete the online form during the enrolment period but prior to applying for your Horizons/ I-Explore module, and it indicates that a level-checking meeting is required, you will be invited to choose a timeslot for an online level-checking meeting using Microsoft Bookings. Once you have attended your online meeting, the outcome of your eligibility will be communicated to you, so that you can decide whether to list the language as one of your top choices on your Horizons/ I-Explore application.
After submitting an application
If you have already submitted your application via our enrolment system, the previous qualifications and experience you stated at the time of applying will be used to determine your eligibility for the language. If an online level-checking meeting is required to establish your eligibility, you will be invited via email to choose a timeslot. Please note that this may take place during the module selection period or after enrolment has closed.
Please note: complete beginners of a language (with no previous experience at all), or those who successfully passed the relevant previous level Horizons module, will not be required to attend a level-checking meeting.
If you are not eligible to take a Horizons or I-Explore module but would like to take a languages evening or lunchtime class, here is information on how to be level checked for Imperial after:hours classes.
