Room requirements and adaptations
Living away from home can be a daunting prospect, especially if you have health concerns, a disability or need additional support. Imperial can provide support and make adjustments for you in university accommodation, as long as you let us know what your requirements are in advance.
If you have specific room requirements, for example, an ensuite room due to a disability or impairment or a fridge to store medication needed in relation to a medical condition, you will need to notify the accommodation team. The Medical, wellbeing and disability page has further information.
If you have a complex condition which involves more extensive rooming requirements, for example, powered doors or a hoist, we recommend you also get in contact with the Disability Advisory Service as early as possible. It will also be possible to arrange a visit to the university to inspect our accommodation.
Ensuite accommodation subsidy
The ensuite accommodation subsidy is for students who indicate a need for an ensuite room on the grounds of a disability or impairment, such as autism or Crohn’s disease. Relevant and up-to-date medical evidence is required for each application year.
The subsidy award is a flat rate, regardless of whether the student is in a standard or premium ensuite room.

Applications open on 1 October 2026. Please email DAS after this date requesting access to the online application form.
Applications will be considered by a panel, comprising the Head of DAS, the Senior Disability Advisor and a Disability Advisor.
The deadline to submit your application is Sunday 8 November. The panel will meet soon after the deadline to review applications. You will be contacted via email to inform you of the outcome.
There will be a second panel meeting in February. This panel will only consider exceptional cases. The deadline to submit your application will be 31 January 2027.
Students in receipt of the ensuite accommodation subsidy
If you are awarded the DAS ensuite accommodation subsidy, please note that your invoices for terms one, two and three will show the full rental cost of your room. You must pay the full cost for term one upfront. The subsidy is applied retrospectively as a credit note to your term two and three account.
The Credit Control team will contact you directly to confirm the outstanding amount payable for the term two and three invoices.
Please note that it is not possible to amend or reissue invoices to show the adjusted amount after the subsidy has been applied.
Applying to stay in halls of residence after your first year
Undergraduate students who can show a disability-related reason for needing to stay in halls of residence after the first year of study can apply to stay in halls of residence for the next academic year.
DAS advisors are only able to support applications from students who are currently supported by the service and with:
- mobility or sensory impairments;
- or those who are on the autistic spectrum.
All other students will need to obtain support from one of the Health Centre Doctors or Faculty Senior Tutors.
Decisions are made by a panel in the spring/summer term and are based on the priority of need. Please email DAS if you would like to discuss having your application supported by us.
