SpLD additional exam arrangements

The university’s information on evidence outlines what is required to receive additional exam arrangements (AEAs).

Examples of AEAs are as follows:

  • Extra time – 25% is the usual amount allocated but this can be increased when there is additional evidence of severe literacy or cognitive weaknesses. Increases are also possible on the grounds of co-occurring health, mental health or disability needs. These increases are aligned with (but not limited to) JCQ guidelines

  • Extra time can be provided to answer questions after a presentation e.g: Viva

  • Extra time can be provided in clinical medical exams (PACES/OSCES). This will be one rest break per hour lasting the span of one station.

  • Extra time may not be provided for some practical exams where there are issues of timed professional ability or competencies.

  • If supervised rest breaks are a more suitable alternative to extra time, these should be up to the equivalent of 25% extra time. Increases in the time of the rest breaks will be considered in line with JCQ guidelines.

  • The provision of a supervised rest break and extra time is not normally considered. Provision of both requires a clear justification from the assessor.

  • A separate room with other candidates receiving extra time can be provided. This can reduce distractions.

  • A private room can be provided in exceptional circumstances.

  • A computer can be provided based on literacy speeds and/ or legibility issues.

  • A reader and/or a scribe can be provided to read the paper out loud and write answers down. This will require a private room and would only be considered in exceptional circumstances.

  • The student’s usual way of working in relation to technological equipment/software should be considered. Provision may not always be manageable, but DAS encourages faculties and departments to aspire to this where possible.

  • An additional printed copy of the exam paper can be provided on request if the exam is digital. Some students find reading online harder or they may need to annotate the paper as they complete.

  • All students are allowed to use digital or hard copy-coloured transparencies as a reading aid for exam papers. There is no requirement to produce evidence to facilitate this.

  • All students are also allowed to use non-electronic earplugs.   There is no requirement to produce evidence to facilitate this.
  • If the evidence presented does not include an arrangement that is subsequently seen as being reasonable, the assessor must be contacted to request a fully justified amendment. If this is not possible, an Imperial reassessment may be possible.

Departments are providing a wider range of assessment methodologies (exam, assignment, project work and presentations). They are also attempting to provide inclusive alternative means of assessment where possible, but this is not available in all situations. An example of this would be a recorded or written submission to replace a presentation in front of a group.
