This course will examine lab-based teaching, distinguishing its different contexts and the variety of roles GTAs do to support students’ learning. The course will review and compare different approaches to lab teaching, and we will also analyse different case scenarios to explore common problems, new strategies and good practices that GTAs can implement in their Lab teaching.

The course includes a live in-person session and asynchronous preparatory work to complete before the live session.

To gain the credit for the course, participants will need to complete the preparatory activities before the session AND fully participate in the live session.

This course is open to Research Degree Students, Postdocs & Research Fellows.

Learning Outcomes 


On completion this course you will be able to:  

  • Distinguish between different types of Laboratory teaching practice 
  • Propose new strategies and approaches to promote active learning in Labs  
  • Evaluate the best practice in a range of situated learning scenarios   
  • Supporting all students: GTA roles and responsibilities in Labs
