Programme Overview
Activate is an 8-month mentoring programme that supports under-represented groups at Imperial, including both current students and prospective PhD students. It offers a welcoming space to connect, grow, and feel supported as you navigate your PhD journey.
The programme aims to:
- improve experiences – supporting a more positive, supported, and fulfilling experience at Imperial, both academically and personally
- increase retention – helping mentees feel able to continue and complete their studies through guidance, connection, and encouragement
- develop a peer community – creating opportunities to meet others, share experiences, and build meaningful connections
- support career development – helping mentees explore their goals, build confidence, and access insight to support their future pathways
- create a deeper sense of belonging – supporting mentees to feel seen, valued, and included within the Imperial community
Activate matches mentees with mentors who bring insight and understanding of the experiences of under-represented students, including the challenges that can arise within education and at Imperial. Mentoring provides a supportive space to reflect, share experiences, and explore your goals.
All Activate mentors take part in a tailored training programme to support effective and meaningful mentoring relationships. Mentees are also supported through dedicated training, workshops, cohort activities, and opportunities to connect with others across the programme.
The programme concludes with an end-of-year celebration, bringing mentors and mentees together to reflect on their journey and the community they have built.
