Working with the media can have many benefits for you and your research - from raising your professional profile, to generating new opportunities for research collaborations, to combating misinformation and improving public understanding of science. This course will cover how the media works, what they are looking for in a research story, how to interest journalists in your research, how to put yourself forward to comment on research news, and provide tips on handling questions from the media.
This course is open to Postdocs, Research Fellows & Research Degree Students.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this workshop you will be able to:
- Recognise how research and new research findings are picked up by the media, including in the daily news cycle
- Identify the elements that can make research newsworthy and attractive to journalists
- Identify how the media office can help advise and support you in working with the media
- Use basic techniques for navigating different types of media interviews
- Promote your own expertise and position yourself to provide expert commentary
