- How do you negotiate during your PhD and after?
- What do you need to prepare?
Negotiation and influencing skills are increasingly important and valued in work and study. This course introduces you to an understanding of, and practice in the skills which contribute to constructive negotiation.
This course has preparatory activities (~45 minutes) to complete before the live course and to engage with during the course. There is a lot of material to explore via the Course Notes and links on Blackboard after the live course, and optional follow ups are available.
This course is designed to develop your capacity to negotiate, prevent and avert conflict. You may like to consider Understanding and Developing Assertiveness and/or to develop conflict resolution strategies we recommend you attend Conflict Management.

This course is open to Research Degree Students.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course and using preparatory and post- course materials you will be better able to:
- Recognise where you can use negotiating and influencing strategies
- Identify the stakeholders involved, their motives, objectives and styles of communication
- Outline seven stages of a negotiation
- Practice applying negotiation skills to help you prepare
- Assess contexts and opportunities to improve your negotiation, persuasion and conflict handling skills
