Fundamental to addressing air pollution is first understanding air pollution formation, transport, and fate. This area of research includes: meteorology and physics and chemistry of the atmosphere; pollutant composition, formation and sources; atmospheric chemistry, transport and dispersion of air pollutants.


Monitoring and modelling tools

Research in the development of air pollution modelling, monitoring, and emissions inventories are needed for a variety of purposes, including: regulatory compliance, exposure assessment, identification of hazardous jobs or tasks, understanding chemical and physical properties of pollutants, informing the public, assessing effectiveness of control measures, predicting impacts of policies, apportioning chemical constituents to their sources, and assessing health effects.

Air pollution impacts the environment and society in multiple ways. Research in this areas includes health-related research such as exposure analysis, epidemiology, toxicology, health impact modeling; ecosystem, building and climatic impacts; broader societal impacts such as environmental justice and economic costs.

To help address and prevent problems related to air pollution, research areas include: the development and assessment of control technologies, regulations, and other policies; the evaluation of externalities, trade-offs and co-benefits associated with policies; the development and evaluation of communication and community engagement on issues related to air pollution.
