EDCC Subcommittees for 2026-27
The RA Committee represents the interests and perspectives of research staff within the Department of Computing, including Research Associates, Research Assistants (RAs), and Research Fellows (RFs). We work to ensure that research staff are visible, valued, supported, and actively engaged in shaping the department’s culture, community, and future direction.
The committee meets fortnightly to discuss issues affecting postdoctoral researchers, identify opportunities for improvement, and develop networking, community-building, and professional development opportunities. Committee members work closely with the RA Mentor & Postdoc Champion and Teaching Fellow for EDI, and contribute to the Department's Equality, Diversity and Culture Committee (EDCC), ensuring that research staff perspectives are represented across departmental activities and decision-making.
Aims and objectives
The RA Committee aims to:
- Represent the interests and experiences of postdoctoral researchers within the department.
- Promote a positive, inclusive and supportive RA/RF community.
- Support networking, collaboration, and peer support among researchers.
- Facilitate professional and career development opportunities.
- Raise awareness of issues affecting research staff and help identify practical solutions.
- Strengthen communication between researchers and departmental leadership.
Activities and Achievements
Since its formation, the committee has led a range of initiatives to support both professional development, strengthen the research community, and enhance the visibility of research staff across the department, including:
- Organising events, seminars and discussion forums that enable researchers to share their work, exchange ideas, and build connections across research groups.
- Facilitating networking opportunities between research staff and colleagues across different job families, helping to increase visibility, collaboration, and awareness of opportunities within the department.
- Delivering career development activities featuring speakers from a range of academic, research, teaching, industry, and professional backgrounds, providing insights into diverse career pathways.
- Advocating for greater recognition, visibility, and inclusion of postdoctoral researchers within the department, while promoting opportunities for research staff to contribute to departmental activities and decision-making.
- Supporting researchers through the sharing of information, guidance, and signposting on career progression and professional development opportunities.
- Contributing to departmental equality, diversity, and culture initiatives through representation on the Equality, Diversity and Culture Committee (EDCC).
Membership
The committee consists of elected Research Associates and Research Fellows and EDCC co-chairs.
