This programme is designed to equip you with the skills and resources you need to make the most of your postdoc and launch your career as a researcher.

It is a three-day residential course for postdocs held off campus to encourage reflection and thoughtful planning. In a structured and supportive environment facilitated by experienced trainers, you will gain a thorough understanding of your career options and develop tools and techniques to help you set and reach a series of short-, medium- and long-term goals enabling you to maximise your success as a postdoc and plan for your next step.

  • Day one: Introductions, career path analysis, PI expectations
  • Day two: Making the most of your postdoc, fellowships, teaching, supervision, networking, REF/TEF/KEF
  • Day three: Next steps, CVs, job searching, goals, planning

This course is for postdocs in the first or second year of their contract.

  • Develop strategies to move toward research independence
  • Learn techniques for working successfully with your PI
  • Research your career options
  • Build a toolkit to plan your career
  • Set clear and robust goals to ensure success for you and your work

Pre-Course Work
  • Details, including expectations, an outline of the course, travel and accommodation and other practical information will be sent approximately a week before the course.

    You will need to bring with you:

    • An up-to-date CV (at least one paper copy)
    • A device on which you can access MS Teams on (i.e. laptop, mobile phone). We will use the Teams area to share files, practical information and resources. You will be added to the Teams area a couple of days before the course begins, so look out for the notification email.
Course Materials
  • A course handbook will be provided.
  • A Microsoft Teams area will be created for all participants
