As a new or aspiring Principal Investigator, you are stepping into a new phase of your career. Turning your attention from managing research to managing and supporting people can catch some new PIs off guard as it requires a very different skillset. This one-day course covers areas that new academic leaders are often most concerned about: Managing time and building and developing a team.
You will explore these areas by working through a series of real-life examples to learn about the crucial factors that may determine your success as a PI and help you become an effective, inclusive, and supportive leader.
This course is aimed at Research Fellows and senior Postdocs.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course you will be able to:
- Identify your personal strengths, weaknesses, values, and motivations
- Examine a variety of leadership and management approaches
- Explore recruitment methods to attract and recruit the right people
- Learn practical techniques to prioritise and manage your time successfully
- Define and create a research profile for your laboratory or group
