LGBT+ History Month happens every February in the UK. The month helps to increase the visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (“LGBT+”) people, their history, lives and their experiences in the curriculum and culture of educational and other institutions, and the wider community. At Imperial we have decided to use the term and celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month.
If you are planning an activity for LGBTQ+ History Month, or an EDI event at any time of the year, please get in touch with the EDI Centre.

Imperial People
"I think it’s important now more than ever to be present and do what you can to amplify and advocate for voices who may not have the ability to talk about their communities."
Owen Cheshire is the Marketing Operations Officer for Enterprise, where he supports the communications and marketing managers to deliver on their specific portfolios.
For Owen, LGBTQ+ History Month is a celebration of where we’ve come from, and recognition of the people who made that progress – even if they didn’t realise it at the time.

“Seeing other Queer people in medicine inspires me to be my whole self within the practice – it’s so important to see other people like you in the same space.”
Cate is a fifth-year medical student who identifies as Queer and uses they/them pronouns.
They are an advocate for the Queer community in medical education, a volunteer for a sex education charity and an active member of campus life.

Previous years
We've seen a range of events at Imperial over the years to mark the month, including in association with Imperial Lates. In 2023, the Careers Service organised events to help explore and hear from inclusive employers. For 2020 we hosted a 'poetry, prose and plays' panel discussion with YA authors Darren Charlton, Cynthia So, and Kay Staples, about their experiences as LGBTQ+ writers telling LGBTQ+ stories for teenagers.
Events organised by Imperial 600 to mark LGBT+ History Month in the past include talks from people such as Amy Lamé, London's Night Czar, and Adam Zmith, co-host of "The Log Books" podcast.
Belonging with Aneesha Bhumber
Don’t be afraid…Be your authentic self

Aneesha's interview was part of Imperial As One's Belonging series, which can be found on the Imperial's YouTube channel.
