On Monday 11th March 2013, Dr Tymms from the Physics Department at Imperial College London attended a Science careers afternoon at Lampton School.
Dr Vijay Tymms read physics at Bristol University, graduating with an MSci. He taught science at a secondary school in Buenos Aires for three years and later completed a PhD in geophysics. Vijay is now a Senior Teaching Fellow in the Physics Department at Imperial College London.
The Science careers afternoon was organised by teaching staff at Lampton School. They arranged for 10 working scientists from a range of disciplines in the geological and physical sciences to sit at tables for a “science speed dating” event. Pupils from years 7 – 11 at Lampton School visited each scientist for 2 minutes to speak with them about their work.
Dr Tymms was asked a wide range of questions and said that “some of the pupils really kept me on my toes with queries that one never gets from undergraduate students”.
Following the event, Dr Tymms said: “I enjoyed the afternoon and hopefully it will have inspired the pupils of Lampton to think about physics more in the future.”
