Dennis Anderson Lecture

The Path to a Net Zero UK

Chris Stark, Chief Executive, Climate Change Committee

Abstract

This lecture will cover ground-breaking new analysis from the Climate Change Committee, detailing the choices for fully decarbonising the UK economy and advising on a path to meeting the UK’s Net Zero target by 2050 at the latest. The Climate Change Committee’s latest advice will be published on 9 December. The lecture will explore the basis of its recommendations on the UK’s Sixth Carbon Budget – the level of greenhouse gases the UK can emit during the period 2033-2037. Chris will provide a deep dive on how the UK can achieve Net Zero, the landscape as we emerge from the pandemic, and how this feeds into UK climate diplomacy in 2021.

The Dennis Anderson Lecture

The Dennis Anderson Lecture is Energy Futures Lab’s flagship annual energy policy lecture. Run in conjunction with the Imperial Centre for Energy Policy and Technology, the series commemorates the huge contribution to the energy-environment debate provided by Centre’s founder, the late Dennis Anderson, Professor of Energy and Environment at Imperial College London. Dennis combined engineering and economics, having worked as Chief Economist at Royal Dutch Shell and Senior Advisor at the World Bank where he played a major role in highlighting the importance and value of the environment. Shortly before his death in 2008, Dennis acted as Executive Advisor to the Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change. Previous Dennis Anderson Lecture speakers include Professor Jim Skea (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and Imperial College), Spencer Dale (Group Chief Economist, BP plc), Ian Marchant (Chief Executive, SSE plc), and Rt Hon. the Lord Deben.
