The Worshipful Company of Engineers (Incorporated by Royal Charter 2004) Promoting Engineering in the City of London with UK Collaboratorium for Research on Infrastructure & Cities Centre for Systems Engineering & Innovation Imperial College London

This Zoom seminar is part of the Engineers Livery Company’s initiative to share knowledge of current engineering and technology issues relevant to the City of London.

Aim:
To highlight the broad challenges facing the City of London to achieve its Carbon reduction and sustainability ambitions, and the significant opportunities these ambitions yield.

Background:
On 27 June 2019 the UK became the first major economy to pass net zero emissions law requiring that the UK bring all greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. The new law poses major economic, scientific and engineering challenges, and a complete transformation of the way we generate and use energy, as well as several hundred billion pounds of investment. Following an extensive study of activities and assets, the City of London Corporation has adopted a radical Climate Action Strategy which sets out how the organisation is planning to achieve net-zero, build climate resilience and champion sustainable growth, both in the UK and globally.

Specifically, the Corporation has committed to:
• Achieve net zero carbon emissions from their own operations by 2027
• Achieve net zero carbon emissions across investments and supply chain by 2040
• Support the achievement of net-zero for the Square Mile by 2040
• Invest £68m over the next six years to support these goals

These ground-breaking plans will undoubtedly present some challenges but will also bring about significant opportunities for investment while requiring a rethink of how we approach infrastructure design, planning, operation and delivery.

The Speakers and Panel:
Dr Ana Mijic, Centre for Systems Engineering and Innovation Co-Director, Senior Lecturer in Water Systems Integration, Imperial College London

Dr Ana Mijic is a Senior Lecturer in Water Systems Integration and a Co-Director of the Centre for Systems Engineering and Innovation (CSEI). She is leading the development of novel systems tools focused on quantifying the interaction between water systems and sustainable development. The work has aim to inform regulatory bodies and water industry if and how we can support economic growth whilst ensuring sustainable water use and flood and water quality management under future uncertainties. Through NERC Innovation Fellowship funding she worked with the UK Environment Agency to apply systems thinking and systemic approaches to develop principles of systems water management at a catchment scale. She has led the CHANSE project on systems water management and irrigation water use in India. Currently, Ana is a Systems Analysis Lead for the CAMELLIA impact programme, where her work is focused on the development of systems water management models. These models can represent the integrated water infrastructure planning system, and how grey and Blue-Green infrastructure solutions can be integrated with housing design. Models can used to inform design and operations of water infrastructure systems that contribute to the overall quality of life in cities through concept of Net Zero Pollution. Ana is a member of the EWRE Hydrology group that was awarded the 2019 Imperial President’s Award for Excellence in Research for Outstanding Research Team.

She will be joined by a panel of distinguished experts chaired by Professor Jennifer Whyte, CSEI CoDirector, Laing O’Rourke / Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Systems Integration:
Daniel Johns FCIWEM, Head of Public Affairs, Anglian Water Services Limited
David Pinder, Executive Chairman, Mixergy; Lead for the Net Zero Carbon Industry Initiative, Construction Leadership Council
