Title:

Uncovering the coastal sediment carbon mosaic

Abstract

Coastal oceans fulfill a crucial role in the global carbon cycle, and are increasingly impacted by anthropogenic forcing. Attaining a better understanding of the biogeochemical characteristics of coastal ocean sediments is key for advancing our understanding of global element cycling and the assessment of ongoing environmental change. In this seminar, we will explore global patterns of coastal sediment carbon dynamics, techniques to deconvolve complex patterns and showcase a global unified dataset of ocean sediment carbon. Last but not least, we will connect the coastal carbon storage to the socioeconomic dimension by exploring the value of national ocean carbon stocks in relation to land-based carbon stocks.
