When thinking about climate change, most people tend to reflect on what they can do as individuals to have an impact. There is a wide range of climate innovations that play an important role in enabling individuals to take meaningful and impactful climate action, that are not known to the wider public. Making our homes more energy-efficient, addressing food waste and choosing ‘greener’ travel options are some examples of areas that touch upon our daily lives, where we need to address innovation as part of our transition to net zero. These areas will need to be decarbonised and we all have a role to play in that process.

Join our panel of experts in a thought-provoking and timely discussion on how individuals can have a meaningful impact on climate action and get insights on how innovation can make a difference at home, on travel and food. There will be time for questions at the end of the panel discussion.

This event is hosted by the Centre for climate change innovation (CCCI), an initiative of the Grantham Institute at Imperial College London and the Royal Institution to catalyse innovation of all forms that address the causes and effects of climate change. The CCCI runs The Greenhouse, a 12-month accelerator programme that supports the growth of young, sustainable businesses looking to tackle climate change.

The following questions will be addressed during the event:

  • Which are the current barriers to climate innovation?
  • How is innovation funded, who benefits from it and how are risks treated?
  • What should we be doing and by when?
  • Why do we still need innovation?
  • How different innovations could have an impact on climate action? E.g.: food waste, energy efficiency and travel.
  • With a focus on food waste, energy efficiency and travel, how do different innovations have an impact on climate action?

Background

This event is organised as part of the UK Universities’ Climate Innovation Showcase of the COP26 Universities Network. The showcase aims to highlight ways in which innovations developed in UK universities, often in collaboration with partners in other countries or in industry, can be applied to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, adapt to the changing climate or inform climate action.
