Speakers
Zehan Wang (14:00 – 14:15)
Zehan was the co-founder / CTO of Magic Pony Technology which was acquired by Twitter in 2016 for a reported $150m after going for just over a year. Whilst at Twitter, he initially took on the role of engineering manager and expanded the scope of the machine learning research team from Magic Pony to work with product teams across the company. He later helped form Twitter’s applied ML research group, and became the Head of Cortex Applied Research at Twitter before leaving in July this year to explore other interests. Prior to entering industry, Zehan completed a PhD in medical image analysis as well as a masters in joint mathematics and computer science from Imperial College London. In his spare time, Zehan is into rock climbing, surfing and video games.
Yishu Miao (14:15 – 14:30)
Yishu is most notably an AI lead at TikTok, and was their first UK hire. Alongside this, he is a research associate here at Imperial, where he focuses on cutting edge generative technologies for NLP – including latent variable models and reinforcement learning. He completed his PhD from the University of Oxford under Phil Blumson, and interned at DeepMind during his time there. Since his PhD, he’s also held various positions at various Oxford based startups: Founder/CEO at Mo Intelligence, and an AI Research Lead at Ufonia.
Shakir Mohamed (14:30 – 14:45)
Shakir is a senior staff research scientist at DeepMind. He is most interested in research that combines multiple disciplines and views of machine learning and its applications. He shapes his efforts around three conceptual pillars: Probabilistic Foundations of Learning and Intelligence, Addressing Global Challenges, and Transformation. He also leads a non-profit organisation called the Deep Learning Indaba, whose mission is to Strengthen African Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. He is an Associate Fellow at the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence at the University of Cambridge, and an Honorary Professor in the Department of Computer Science at University College London (UCL).
Oana Cocarascu (14:45 – 15:00)
Oana is a Lecturer in Artificial Intelligence at King’s College London and an Honorary Lecturer at Imperial College London. Previously, she was a Research Associate and a Teaching Fellow at Imperial and completed a PhD and MEng in Computing (Artificial Intelligence) from Imperial. She received her PhD in 2019 where she worked at the intersection of natural language processing, machine learning, and argument mining. Her work is on applied research, specifically on how artificial intelligence can be deployed to support real-world applications.
