Title

The scattering problem for the wave equation on the Schwarzschild black hole exterior

Abstract

This year, the full non-linear stability of the Schwarzschild family of black holes was proven in a 500-plus page paper. Studying the wave equation – a so-called ‘poor-mans linearisation’ – is a first step to understanding the results of the paper in their full complexity. Here, we will outline methods for proving decay of solutions of the wave equation with scattering data on Schwarzschild spacetimes. These methods will be useful in understanding stability, or lack thereof, of less well-understood spacetimes subsequently.
