The Hadley Cells are usually pictured in terms of the zonal and time averaged circulation of the tropical atmosphere. This average circulation is made up of the flows associated with the flaring of near equatorial convection that is both local in longitude and limited in time. It will be argued that recognising this leads to a more accurate first order view of the thermodynamics and dynamics of the Hadley Cells.
