Active particle models from the PDE perspective

Abstract

Active particle models have interesting properties, such as having many different types of stationary solutions. To study this one can use a mean field limit equation giving rise to a kinetic description. Mean fields for active particles usually do not evolve according to a typical gradient structure as ‘passive’ particles do. I will discuss an active particle mean field model for a collective of ants. I will show numerical and theoretical results for this particular model. This will cover the stability of the homogeneous solution and the approximation of stationary solutions. I also draw an analogy with questions that have been solved for ‘passive’ particle models such as the Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck equation.
