In March 1972, Winston Trew and three others were arrested by a specialist pickpocketing squad at the Oval Underground Station, charged with theft, attempted theft and assault on police officers, found guilty and sentenced to 2 years in prison.

After being released from prison in 1973, the arresting officer, Detective Sergeant Ridgewell, was found to be involved in organised crime. In 1980 he was convicted of conspiracy to steal, jailed for 7 years, and died in prison in December 1982. Winston Trew’s convictions for assault on police and attempted theft were finally overturned in December 2019.”
