Join us for an exciting opportunity to hear from Professor Sir Rory Collins from the University of Oxford, as he visits Imperial to reflect on the past, present and future of clinical trials, drawing on his extensive work in cardiovascular research and population health.

There is an urgent need to develop and implement guidelines based on the scientific principles underlying randomised controlled trials that focus on those aspects that really matter both for generating reliable findings and for ensuring patient safety, and that take advantage of technological advances to increase the scope of randomised evidence. Such guidelines would be relevant not only for the various phases of clinical development that lead to regulatory approval of new interventions (with reduction of wasteful practices enabling more new treatments to become available to more patients), but also for randomised trials of existing treatments (by making more such trials affordable), leading to better patient care and improved public health.

Professor Collins is a epidemiologist and clinical trialist, best known for his pioneering work in cardiovascular medicine and his leadership of the UK Biobank – a large-scale biomedical database containing in-depth, de-identified genetic and health information from half a million UK participants. From the groundbreaking ISIS “mega-trials”, to the global adoption of statin therapies and the founding of the Nuffield Department of Population Health, his work has fundamentally shaped how we prevent and treat heart disease.

Don’t miss the chance to hear from one of the key figures driving innovation in clinical research and public health.

The talk will be followed by a reception until 19:00.
