biography – Prof Charles Bangham
Charles Bangham qualified in medical sciences at the University of Cambridge and in clinical medicine at the University of Oxford. As an undergraduate, he published studies on lung function, genetic polymorphisms, endocrine function and demography in high altitude populations in Nepal. After working as a hospital physician for three years, he carried out a PhD in viral immunology at the National Institute for Medical Research and the University of Oxford. In 1995 he was appointed to the Chair of Immunology in Imperial College on the St Mary’s campus, a post created in 1960 for Rodney Porter, who later received the Nobel Prize for identifying the structure of immunoglobulin. He headed the Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine from 2011 to 2018, and in 2019 he founded the Institute of Infection in Imperial. His research is on the immunology and virology of persistent viral infections, especially the human T cell leukaemia virus – the retrovirus HTLV-1. Charles was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2019.
