Biography: Prof Mala Maini

Mala Maini is a Professor of Viral Immunology in the Institute of Infection, Immunity and Transplantation at UCL, London and an Honorary Consultant Physician in the viral hepatitis clinic. After completing her specialist medical accreditation in 1995 she obtained an MRC Clinical Training Fellowship, leading to a PhD on T cell clonality and senescence in 1998. In 2002 she was awarded an MRC/Academy of Medical Sciences Tenure-track Clinician Scientist Fellowship, and built up her own group working on the immunopathogenesis of hepatitis B. In 2009 she was promoted to a Personal Chair and awarded Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator Awards in 2013 and 2019.  In 2016 she was elected to the Academy of Medical Sciences.

The Maini lab studies adaptive immunity to hepatitis B, liver cancer and SARS-CoV-2 to inform the development of immunotherapies and vaccines for these major causes of morbidity and mortality. Through access to well-characterised patient cohorts, human tissue samples and models, their studies provide insights into beneficial and dysfunctional T and B cell responses. The lab is particularly interested in dissecting and harnessing tissue-resident immunity for frontline sentinel surveillance of viruses and cancer.  Mala enjoys mentoring and supporting her lab members to obtain fellowships and develop their careers. Work in the Maini lab is funded by Wellcome, UKRI, Cancer Research UK, ERC Horizon 2020 and the Royal Free Charity.
