A perspective projection of a dodecahedral tessellation in H3. Four dodecahedra meet at each edge, and eight meet at each vertex, like the cubes of a cubic tessellation in E3.

Title: What they don’t tell you about schemes

Speaker: Edward Young

Abstract: I will give an introduction to scheme theory. We will see that the Zariski topology, very natural to an algebraist, has some rather counterintuitive quirks: open sets are dense and compact, nothing is Hausdorff, and there are more points and data than we know what to do with. In a series of examples, we will see how to tame some of these difficulties to produce a rich geometric theory.

Some snacks will be provided before and after the talk.
