The looming reality of Britain’s departure from the European Union brings considerable uncertainty for UK Science. Academic research, with its emphasis on the values of internationalism, find itself challenged by the inward focus of Brexit, which is mirrored by similar political movements in other countries.
As institutions like Imperial reaffirm their credentials as international centres of world-class science, the fast-moving and uncertain politics here and abroad raises questions of how we allow science to survive and thrive.
How do we ensure the UK’s place as a globally respected centre of academic research is preserved? Can science cast itself as bridge to encourage international collaboration and bring countries together in order to tackle the global scale challenges we face?
At October’s Imperial Lates, our Global Science Policy Forum invites you to a public discussion looking at the importance of international cooperation to tackle pressing global challenges, and the future of UK science as the country redefines its relationship with the European Union.
International science in a post-Brexit Britain will be hosted by Prof. Nick Jennings, (Vice Provost Research and Enterprise, Imperial College London) and will feature:
- Professor Sir Adrian Smith (Director and Chief Executive of the Alan Turing Institute) to deliver a keynote speech. Professor Sir Smith has recently completed a major independent review for the UK Government on how future international collaboration can best be designed to positively impact UK science and R&D
- Vivienne Stern (Director, Universities UK International) who will chair the Q&A component of the evening
N.B. Please print off your ticket and bring it with you on the night to show to our volunteers on the door.
If you could please arrive at least 10 minutes before the start of the discussion, that will allow us to start on time. Late arrivals cannot be guaranteed a seat in the lecture theatre
