This Changing Planet seminar is given by Jenny Chase, Head of BloombergNEF’s solar analysis team and author of Solar Power Finance Without the Jargon. It is organised by students on the Science and Solutions for a Changing Planet Seminar Series.

The global solar industry is moving so fast that covering it is a full-time job, but some of the fundamentals are more constant. This talk will cover a very short history of solar subsidies and the resulting booms and busts, the experience curve, a more casual explanation of levelized cost of energy than is usually offered, and what the move to auctions has meant for the solar industry as well as a forward view on the next few years.

Biography

Jenny Chase is the head of BloombergNEF’s solar analysis team, which she founded in 2006 after joining startup New Energy Finance as an intern. The team provides market research for financial and corporate clients on solar demand, supply, price, technology and investment. Jenny has authored the quarterly PV Market Outlook report covering the solar industry from a financial perspective for over a decade, and authored a book, Solar Power Finance Without the Jargon, published by World Scientific Publishing in 2019.

Jenny holds a BA in Physical Sciences and an MSci in Physics from the University of Cambridge, England, and breeds award-winning West of England geese. She is on Twitter as @solar_chase
