Geotechnics Section
In Geotechnics, which at Imperial comprises Soil Mechanics and Engineering Geology, our focus is on understanding the mechanics, behaviour and properties of soils and soft rocks in order to provide real solutions to industry including tunnelling, oil and gas, infrastructure and road building. Our work involves numerical modelling, field monitoring and laboratory-based testing.
The group is very active in research, tackling these real world challenges alongside a host of academic and industrial partners. We do this through a combination of fundamental and applied research, and we collaborate often with cross-disciplinary researchers and industrial partners.
We offer numerous opportunities to pursue research through our PhD programme. We are also heavily engaged in masters and undergraduate teaching, and have very strong links with Alumni groups worldwide. Many of our alumni return regularly for visits and events, including the Annual BGA Rankine Lecture.
