If you are a UK taxpayer, Imperial can reclaim the tax you have paid on every donation you make. For every £1 you give we can claim up to 25p back from the HM Revenue & Customs at no extra cost to you. To claim Gift Aid on your donation, we need your permission. There are three ways to give us permission to claim Gift Aid on your donation:
- Sign the Gift Aid declaration on the donation form when you make a donation
- Call +44 (0)20 7594 6149 to give permission over the phone
- Fill in a Gift Aid declaration form and send it by post. Download the Gift Aid Form
Please contact Sandra Carr at s.carr@imperial.ac.uk or +44 (0)20 7594 6119 if you wish to change your name or home address, cancel your Gift Aid declaration or if you no longer pay enough tax to cover claimable Gift Aid on your donations.
There are a number of ways to give tax efficiently: through shares, through your will, or by claiming Gift Aid.
Please note that tax regulations can change. It is advisable to consult with a tax professional or refer to the latest HMRC guidelines to ensure compliance and maximise tax benefits.
Giving stocks and shares
If you make a give through shares to Imperial, you can claim full tax relief on their market value and any costs involved in making the gift, such as brokers’ fees. If the shares you donate have increased in value since you originally bought them, you don’t need to pay capital gains tax on the difference. If the shares you donate are worth less than when you bought them, you cannot use this loss to offset any other capital gains tax liability. Please email giving@imperial.ac.uk for help making the arrangements.
Gift Aid for higher rate taxpayers
When you make a donation under Gift Aid, we claim back the basic rate of tax paid on the donation – increasing the value to us of your gift by 25%. If you are a higher rate taxpayer, it is possible for you to claim back the remaining tax paid on the donation (that is, the difference between the basic rate and higher rate at 40% or 45%) through your tax return. Visit the HMRC website to learn more about the Gift Aid scheme, or please get in touch at giving@imperial.ac.uk if you have any questions.
Giving in your will
A few changes to your will could reduce the amount of inheritance that needs to be paid on your estate – and leave a lasting legacy for the future of science and education.
- Imperial College London has charitable status for all UK tax purposes (HM Revenue and Customs reference number X2361) which means that bequests made to the university are wholly exempt from UK inheritance tax.
- Additionally, individuals who include charitable legacies in their will of at least 10% of their net taxable estate will benefit from a 36% rate of Inheritance Tax (IHT), a 10% reduction from the usual IHT rate of 40%. The net value of your estate is the sum of all the assets after deducting any debts, liabilities, reliefs, exemptions and the nil-rate band.
For more information about making a gift in your will, please contact Kiera Sohel at k.sohel@imperial.ac.uk or on +44 20 7594 7067.
There are special tax breaks or benefits available for donors living in the US, Canada and Europe.
US taxpayers can give in a tax-efficient way by making a gift to the Imperial College Foundation to make their gift tax deductible. Find out more about tax efficient giving from the US.
We are grateful to all donors who choose to make a gift in their will to support Imperial students and researchers. If you are considering leaving a gift in your will, please get in touch with the Legacy Giving Team at +44 (0)20 7594 9330 or giving@imperial.ac.uk.
