Following the 2023–24 delivery of I-Explore STEMM modules, we reviewed student and external examiners’ feedback across the portfolio to identify strengths and areas for enhancement. This summary outlines key highlights and the actions we are taking in response to recurring themes.

Highlights from 2023–24

Engaging content and real-world Relevance

Many modules were praised for their topical focus and real-world application. Students appreciated the opportunity to explore contemporary challenges through interdisciplinary perspectives, which deepened their understanding and motivation.

Inspirational guest speakers

The inclusion of external experts and guest lecturers was consistently highlighted as a strength. These sessions brought industry insights and cutting-edge research into the classroom, enhancing the learning experience and connecting theory to practice.

Innovative teaching and assessment

Modules employed a range of creative teaching methods, including hands-on experimentation, reflective practice, and project-based learning. These approaches were well received and encouraged active engagement and critical thinking.

Good practice in assessment design

Several modules demonstrated thoughtful assessment strategies, including the use of pass/fail criteria, peer moderation, and reflective components. These approaches helped ensure fairness and alignment with learning outcomes.

Themes for Improvement and Actions Taken

Group work and fairness

Some concerns about uneven contributions in group work were voiced. In response, modules are refining peer assessment tools, clarifying roles, and sharing good practice to support equitable participation.

Attendance and Scheduling

Some modules experienced drops in attendance, particularly later in term or due to placement clashes. We are encouraging clearer communication about attendance expectations in course descriptions and flexible scheduling of coursework deadlines.

Assessment Clarity and Alignment

A few modules are revisiting their assessment structures to better align with learning outcomes and ensure transparency. Support is being provided for rubric development and assessment design.

We are grateful to all students and external examiners who contributed feedback. These insights are vital in shaping the future of I-Explore STEMM modules and ensuring they remain innovative, inclusive, and impactful.
