Our Commitment to Patient & Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE)

At the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Health Protection Research Unit in Radiation Threats and Hazards (HPRU RTH), we place patients, the public, and people with lived experience at the heart of our research. Our vision is to meaningfully involve and engage communities at every stage of the research cycle — raising awareness, building trust, and ensuring that our work reflects real-world needs.

Through a co-developed PPIE programme with our Public and Community Oversight Group (PCOG) and partner institutions (UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), Imperial College London (ICL), King’s College London (KCL) and Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), we aim to strengthen the relevance, transparency, and impact of our research. By integrating community insights, we improve how evidence is translated into public health policy, guidance, and communication tools, ultimately helping people understand radiation risks and protective measures.

Our ongoing commitment to diverse public involvement not only enhances research quality and fairness but also helps train the next generation of public health leaders to champion meaningful engagement.

The PPIE strategy is led by the UKHSA lead Dr. Nora Bourbia and the ICL lead Dr. Oluwaseyi Arowosegbe. The implementation and governance of the PPIE strategy and activities is supported by a steering committee that consists of our colleagues from other NIHR specialised programs in Knowledge Mobilization (KMb), Academic Career Development (ACD), and research inclusion (RI).
