CSEI Seminar Series 2022

Integrated Urban-Infrastructure Planning for Environment-Positive Cities

SEMINAR REGISTRATION LINK

Background

Population growth creates demand for more homes, and new residents require access to infrastructure. It has become increasingly clear that the various challenges facing urban areas – economic, environmental, climate, social and demographic – are interwoven: that is why successful urban developments can only be achieved through an integrated, systems approach. Better aligning land use and infrastructure planning can improve urban development and is a positive way to influence the shape, structure, and economic, social, and environmental performance of a city, improving social outcomes and sustainability. Planning land use and green-grey-blue infrastructure together encourages development in places that can accommodate growth and identify the optimal and most sustainable way to deliver the required services and infrastructure. This integrated nature of land and infrastructure planning would also help meet the requirements of The National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) which sets out the Government’s economic, environmental and social planning policies for England and which covers a wide range of topics including: housing, business, economic development, transport and the natural environment.

It is in this context that the 2022 CSEI Seminar Series will explore how a systems approach to integrated land and infrastructure planning is key to achieving climate change mitigation and a reduction in carbon and other forms of pollution. The seminars will also highlight how integrated planning can help us overcome the broad challenges we face to achieve our carbon reduction and sustainability ambitions. The series aims to offer different perspectives – from academia, industry and policy – and to be very interactive.
